Making Milk Chocolate and Vegan Dark Chocolate [MakerID-26]

The biggest problem we wanted to fix was that normally, good, high quality chocolate isn't cheap. Most convenient store chocolate, like hershey's chocolate, is made from child slaves in West Africa. Since we don’t want to feed into the system, it would be cool if we started making our own chocolate, so companies like Hershey’s would lose money, and find more ethical ways to have their chocolate made. We do understand that buying ingredients and making chocolate every time isn’t easy, so another way we can break the system is to buy chocolate that you know is coming from an ethical background, and that it is giving back to the community it was made from. We think more people will think about what they're buying, and looking into the background of these companies. This could result in less companies using child labor being supported, and will be forced to change.

When we first started this project, the plan was just to make vegan foods. Ice cream, being everyone's favorite food, came to mind at first. We learned that making ice cream without cow's milk is a lot harder than expected. After that we thought about making chocolate with almond milk without instructions. That was too easy though, and we wouldn't learn any maker skills. So we decided to make our own milk and dark chocolate and make packaging for it.

One of the main problems with our project, was that materials for making chocolate is not super easy to find, and we also had to work around the busy schedule for working. For a PE period, we worked on our project, to make up for lost time. During one period, we didn’t have any cocoa powder, so we tried to make white chocolate. We put the milk powder in while the heat was on, which ended up burning everything. This was a valuable lesson to learn, so that we didn’t do that while making our other chocolate. If we had more time with this project, we would add in different things, like nuts and berries. We’d also try making white chocolate, as our previous attempt failed. Our project cost around $30, including things like cocoa butter and milk powder.
